696 The American Florist. Oct. 22, New York. BUSINESS IS IRKEGULAK. There has been spasmodic improve- ments in the market since our last notes were written, that means that some day’s business was g-ood; others poor. The Saturday trade, always poor in summer, is now reviving. There is also a better moveinent on the first days of the week. While the weather has been cool enough to con- siderably reduce the arrivals of roses is has not yet put the outdoor stock out of business, the most noteworthy arrivals being- the dahlias. Chrysan- themums are now in heavy supply, but their movement in sales is not particu- larly active. Sun Glow, White Frost, Poehlmann, Yellow Frost, Oconto, Tiger, Chieftain, Tints of Gold, Mar- igold, Chrysolora, Early Frost and Golden Glow are all arriving. In roses, Columbia continues in the lead, if both quantity and quality are considered. Ophelia has improved with the advance of the season. There is some good Butterfly coming in, but customers do not seem to have much choice between them and Ophelia. Premier is doing well, but few of them have reached the special grade. Fine blooms of Dunlop are seen, but its weak stems give grounds for complaint and it may be expected to improve in that respect later in’ the season. If there was any great demand for.good red roses it would be hard to satisfy, as Hadley and Crusader are both un- satisfactory at this season. Hoosier Beauty seams to be almost out of the running. One noteworthy feature of the market which denotes that the higher priced retail stores are not doing a heavy business, is the surplus in cattleyas and lily of the valley. There came near to being a glut of both in the past week. Carnations are always slow in the chrysanthemum season and this autumn is no excep- tion, but there is, for the season, some fine stock on the market that sells well. While some violets arrive they can scarcely be quoted as factors. The foregoing may not seem to be a par- ticularly proinising digest of condi- tions, but when the general stagnation in almost all other lines of business is considered, we conclude that the florist business is holding up well. There are some features of the trade that it is well to keep in mind. It has been said before, but will hear repeti- tion, that the people are not compelled to buy flowers as they are food and clothing. At a time of general depres- sion in business such as we are now passing through, the public has the final decision, is particularly sensitive over high prices on what it does not have to buy. All branches of the trade will be wise if they keep this fact in mind; and as to advertising: The most successful advertisers in all lines of business have been men who were candid with their custoi, ners. October 17.—There was a decided falling off in supply of outdoor stock this morning and its finish seems to he at hand. There is a firmer tone in good roses. BOSE GEOWHSiS’ ASSOCIATION. The Rose Growers’ Co-operative As- sociation of New York has been organ- ized with the object of promoting the interests of rose growers who ship to this market. Other features may be taken up later. The following oflicers were elected: Lincoln Pierson, Madi- son, N. J., president; Eugene Daille- douze, vice-president, and Frank H. Traendly, treasurer. NOTES. Doyle & Booth, 112 West 28th street, have been receiving from. James Di- dato, Bound Brook, N. J., stock of the Chrysanthemum Chieftain one month ahead of its usual time. He is also sending them good Oconto, Chrysolora and other kinds. To the Retail Trade; Let us ship you some and convince you, Mr. Retailer, that they are the best money can buy. CARNATIONS Of the Finest Keeping Quality, 20 to 24 inch stems, are arriving at my store from the range of W. D. HOWard, a veteran grower. They comprise Cottage Maid, Laddie, Mrs. C. W. Ward, Pink Delight, Matchless, Eureka, Bernice, Benora, White Delight, in any quantity; Maine Sunshine and Rosalia only in limited quantities. Shipping orders promptly taken care of.
