A rotary printing machine can be defined as a printing press where the images required to be printed are strictly curved about a cylinder. The process of printing can be easily undertaken on a huge number of substrates that includes paper, plastic, cardboard, and plastic. The substrates can also be sheet feed or unwound on a consistent roll through the press. This is done in order to be printed as well as further modified when required. This means that the machine will facilitate user to indulge in carious creative processes such as overprint varnished, die cut, and embossed prints. All printing presses utilizing continuous rolls are usually referred to as “web presses”. The invention of rotary drum printing was done by Richard March Hoe in the year 1843. In the year 1846, the concept was brought to perfection and patented in 1847.
The modern printing world uses 3 primary types of rotary presses. These include the following listed below:
1. Offset or web offset
3. Flexo or flexography
All the above 3 types of rotary presses utilize cylinders to print. However, these cylinders vary in their methodology. The popular offset lithography utilizes a fantastic chemical process where a specific image is applied chemically to a plate. This is generally done via the exposure of varied photosensitive layers available on the plate material. The concept of Lithography is highly based on the verity that water and oil cannot mix. This facilitates the basic planographic process to function well. In the perspective of a printing plate, a wet-able surface or the non-image area can also be termed as hydrophilic. The image area or a non-wettable surface is termed as hydrophobic.
In rotary printing, Gravure is a process where smaller cells or holes are efficiently imprinted into a copper cylinder. The cylinder is filled with ink. Another term ‘flexography’ is related to the printing process. It is a kind of relief system wherein a raised or embossed image is created on a naturally polymer based plate.
Another famous process is that of stamp collecting. The rotary-press-printed stamps are usually given a different size as compared to the stamps that are printed with a flat plate. This happens due to the stamp images being further away from each other on a rotary press. This makes the individual stamps to appear larger. These usually measure anywhere between 1/2 mm to 1 mm.

Early Victa Mower
Not as old as the 18 but can’t be much newer either as it still lacks the protective sides on the mower deck.
